Highlights from Frieze 2013

We headed to Randall's Island to check out the goings on at the 2013 Frieze Contemporary Art Fair and came back with some eye-catching highlights to share.

While many of the works on hand were substantial in their realization, there was something about them being housed together in one giant space that gave the pieces often reflective, and mirrored finishes an appeal that was strictly commercial, and purely decorative.

That said, there were still plenty of works to admire such as Francesco Vezzoli's warped portrait, above.

A reflective mobile we could imagine attracting attention in any space

Paul McCarthy's playful poodle in shocking pink was one of the fair's boldest standouts

A fragmented body that gyrated on a rotating etagere made for a genius take on the human form in sculpture

Extra large panels of knit canvases added a welcome sense of craftwork to the fair's otherwise sleek & slick offerings

Selima Optique at The Cools Jamboree

The Selima Optique team was honored to take part in The Cools debut Jamboree this past Wednesday and had a blast!

Amidst a sea of cool, creative downtown types from event curators to patrons, everyone on hand brought a positively vibrant energy to the evening! With a line around the block, many consider this event to be 'the event of the summer' and we couldn't have been more thrilled to take part in it. And in case you couldn't make it out or in, there's talk of another Jamboree slated for August -details to come!
The CFDA girls got the ball rolling on our 'Draw a Winning Frame Contest' with this adorable homage to Selima!

NYC Events: Schiaperelli and Prada - Impossible Conversations at The Met

Miuccia Prada captured by Guido Harrari, 1999

Before heading to the preview of Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations at The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute, we couldn't help but think about how challenging it must have been when trying to top last year's record-breaking retrospective of the work of Alexander McQueen.

And while the McQueen tribute celebrated the late designer's deft hand at the theatrical nature of high-fashion, this year saw curators Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton mining through the genius work of two women designers, Elsa Schiaperelli and Miuccia Prada. Both of whom are considered to be the most influential designers of the past 100 years and share affinities beyond simply being Italian women in the field of design.

Although their creations hail from two completely different era's, displayed side by side, Schiaperelli's bold designs remain timeless and utterly inspiring. For those with an eye on high-design or those looking for inspiration, we highly suggest you visit The Met's Costume Institute this summer.

Designs created decades apart from each other by Schiaperelli & Prada stand side by side in front of a short film projection by Baz Luhrmann.

Prada highlights from the past 15+ years put the spotlight on the designer's separates.

Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations at The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute runs from May 10–August 19, 2012. Visit MetMuseum.org
